One day one of my friends has asked me how many Crores is equivalent to 100 billion dollars. I couldn’t reply immediately. After few minutes, I gave answer, but even then I am not sure of my reply. Few people may have immediate answer, but like me, many may take few seconds to reply. Especially people who are above forty find this difficult. Many of these people had their mathematics in Crores, lakhs and thousands – a British system. But now, everybody in the world uses Metric system.

Now, time has come for India to align itself with the world and start measuring their currency in Metric system. To start with, Government should introduce new system right from school education. All of us are aware, we read tables in the language we learnt them. While I am comfortable in recollecting the tables in my mother tongue i.e. in Telugu, my daughter recollects in English. Same thing goes with other mathematical knowledge.

This will help even the government machinery in preparing their estimates for international financial institutions and other investment institutions that are financing and investing in India. Further, countries in the world will have better understanding about India and its financial management. There may be many advantages, which we may not conceive today.

May be a small step but it’s time we conceal the Crores and bring out the billions Sent in by Bh.VVS Bhaskar, Superintendent.
