Ingenious way of gathering intelligence – watch TV

In the academies they teach officers the art of gathering intelligence – the overt way and the covert way. Now some of the techniques are being put to practice. It seems in Mumbai Service Tax department, two inspectors are assigned a rather strange job. Their duty is to watch TV and come up with a list of brand ambassadors. The Department is planning to make a list of all brand ambassadors and circulate it all over the country.

While the idea is great, it seems the department need not take the trouble of making a couple of inspectors go through the agony of watching TV for eight hours. The information is readily available with AdEx of TAM Media ResearchIndia, a TV ratings company.

Is TV watching fun job for the inspectors?

When televisions were first installed in jails, a released convict was asked by a journalist, “Did you enjoy the television in the jail?” “I thought it was part of the punishment” was the terse reply.
