Transparency International’s Corruption Barometer
Transparency International has just released its Corruption Barometer based on an opinion poll for the year 2005 and India does not really fare well.
Countries where political parties are the most corrupt institutions - Indians believe that political parties are the most corrupt, followed by Police, legislature and Customs.
Where corruption affects political life to a large extent. More than 70% Indians believe that corruption affects political life.
The biggest pessimists: Indians are the biggest pessimists- 78% believe that corruption will increase or are they realists?
Cost of corruption: An Indian pays 102 dollars as bribes in a year while it is 45 in Pakistan and 205 in Cameroon. An Indian household pays about 10 to 20% of the per capita GDP as bribe while it is less than 10% in Pakistan.
Bribery – demand and supply. India tops where bribes are directly asked for with 70% while 28% said a bribe was offered to avoid a problem with the authorities - A bribe offered for a service entitled to - Bribes for public services - significantly India ranks low here and a large number of Indians opined that they need not pay bribes for access to public services.
