Narcotics smuggling up – FM

Mr. Chidambaram said in a reply in Parliament yesterday that

  • The total value of smuggled narcotics till October 2005 was Rs 61.48 crore,

  • Seizure of smuggled narcotics at foreign post offices had gone up by 21 times from Rs 0.38 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 8.19 crore this year.

  • The value of smuggled goods like gold, diamond and narcotic drugs was Rs 80.44 crore in 2004-05 and Rs 55.69 crore till October this year,

  • This year 191 people were arrested on charges of indulging in smuggling and 59 had been convicted till October 2005.

  • The conviction rate of smugglers was also increasing steadily in last three years from 124 in 2002-03 to 131 in 2004-05
