dumping duty on caustic soda - extended</font></strong></p>
<p align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">For
once the Government has amended a live anti dumping notification. The anti dumping
duty on Sodium Hydroxide, commonly known as Caustic Soda originating in, or
exported from, Iran, Saudi Arabia, United States of America, France and Japan,
was imposed by notification No. 69/2001- CUSTOMS, dated the 26th June, 2001
with effect from 26. 12.2000 and would have lapsed after 25.12. 2000 and now
the government has extended it till 25th of June, 2006. And this amendment has
been issued a whole month before the notification lapsed. DDT had several occasions
to point out the Government amending dead notifications and amending a notification
a month before its due date of lapse is pretty good planning. </font></p>

dumping duty on Cold Rolled Flat Products of stainless steel</strong></font></p>
<p align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The
antidumping duty on import of Cold Rolled Flat Products of stainless steel originating
in, or exported from the European Union, Japan, Canada and the United States
of America was imposed by Notification No. 134/2002-Cus., dated 5-12-2002. Now
the anti dumping duty is re imposed and notification No. 134/2002 is superseded.

smuggling up – FM</font></strong></p>

Chidambaram said in a reply in Parliament yesterday that</font></p>

The total value of smuggled narcotics till October 2005 was Rs 61.48 crore,</font></div>

<li>
<div align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" align="justify">Seizure
of smuggled narcotics at foreign post offices had gone up by 21 times from
Rs 0.38 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 8.19 crore this year. </font></div>
</li>
<li>
<div align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" align="justify">The
value of smuggled goods like gold, diamond and narcotic drugs was Rs 80.44
crore in 2004-05 and Rs 55.69 crore till October this year,</font></div>
</li>
<li>
<div align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" align="justify">This
year 191 people were arrested on charges of indulging in smuggling and 59
had been convicted till October 2005. </font></div>
</li>
<li>
<div align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" align="justify">The
conviction rate of smugglers was also increasing steadily in last three
years from 124 in 2002-03 to 131 in 2004-05 </font></div>

is a difficult place to attract large amounts of FDI</strong></font></p>
<p align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Who
could have said this? Surprisingly, the Finance Minister of the country! And
may be his bureaucracy is to blame to a large extent. Here is what the
FM said at the 21st India Economic Summit:-</font></p>

attract only a fraction of FDI </font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" align="justify"> India
is a difficult place to attract large amounts of FDI</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" align="justify"> There
has been some rethinking on this. We have opened a few doors and need to
open a few more to attract FDI</font></li>
<li><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" align="justify"> It
is only through this that we can take advantage of a young and educated
workforce that will only grow</font></li>
</ul>
