E – filing of returns mandatory for excise – Ahmedabad Commissioner

And you don’t need an internet connection; they are prepared to accept the e returns off line too. But it is going to be mandatory for those who have paid more than one Crore rupees as duty in PLA last year. They have to file their returns only electronically from February 2007 and those who paid more than fifty lakhs rupees, it is mandatory from April 2007. Are they going to amend the laws?

The Ahmedabad II commissioner had=s initiated several steps to assist the assessees in filing e returns.

1. A training programme in e filing had been conducted and further training programme is planned for January 2007.

2. CDs having the required software and help files are available with the officers of the Range and assessees are welcome to collect them free of cost. (great gesture, Commissioner!)

3. A call centre is to be opened to give help to the trade in case of any doubts, clarifications regarding e - filing. The number is 99790-99602 and the contact person is Mr. RashminVishwas. The services will be free of cost.

Let us hope, others will emulate Ahmedabad.
