History in the making – silk route opened
People in Sikkim fondly remember tales of Indian merchants leading weary mule caravans loaded with everything from axles to shoes over the high Himalayan pass of Nathu La for sale in nearby Tibet. But that was more than forty years ago. The India China war had closed the trade link which is to be opened again today in a grand ceremony.
And today it is not going to be tired mules but hi-tech vehicles what with a swanky internet café and the world’s highest ATM at the 4300 metre high mountain pass.
