North East concessions – extension requested
Regional governments in the northeast have exhorted New Delhi to extend the North East Industrial Policy (NEIP) by another 10 years to boost economic development and investments in the region.
The NEIP, announced in 1997, expires next year. The Industry in North East wants the extension of the NEIP up to March 2017. There are similar exemptions for Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The northeastern states in the past five years got investments of Rs.1200 Crores while Uttaranchal got Rs.4000 Crores and Jammu and Kashmir Rs. 2000 Crores.
The North East wants extension of transport and capital investment subsidy for another 10 years, inclusion of power plants, hospitals and tourism infrastructure as thrust sector units, exemption from service tax, and 100 percent financial support for setting up the Industrial Infrastructure Development (IID) and Export Promotion Industrial Parks (EPIP)
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.
