Shetty’s Hummer car in DRI custody</font></strong></p>
<p align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">THE
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has Suniel Shetty’s car for evading
Rs 35 lakh in customs duty on his Hummer - which it seized yesterday. Sunil
claims he is innocent, but DRI does not think so. He got the car on May 13th
for a price of Rs 70 Lakhs, but he returned it to his agent in Delhi as the
windshield was broken and the papers were not in order. According to the DRI
this is one of the cars imported under the EPCG scheme without payment of duty.
It seems the UK exporter Intercep has said that his company had nothing to do
with Sunil Shetty. But a look at their website gives a different picture. Sunil
says his agent is in his Delhi, but Intercep says it sold the car through its
agent in Mumbai. Intercep has proudly announced in its web site that they had
the honour of selling a car to Sunil Shetty. The date of sale of course matches.
Sunil says he got the car on 13th May and the Intercep website confirms that.
Obviously Number 13 is bad! Incidentally that website shows pictures of two
more cars shipped to Mumbai. May be DRI can start investigations on the whereabouts
of those and some more cars which Intercep must have sold in India. You can

of supplying a beautiful white Hummer in Right Hand Drive to the famous
Indian Film Star Sunil Shetty. It was supplied through our Indian Agent
in Mumbai</font></p>
<p align="justify"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Laljee's
car is photographed in the centre along with two other cars for Mumbai.
Sunil's car has the "Star" shining on the bonnet. The car on
the right is a 2004 model but Sunil's car is the fantastic white colour
and he shows excellent taste by showing the Hummer's clean lines without
brush guard or spotlights.</font></p>

enforcement agencies seem determined to spoil the festive atmosphere in the
country. Just before Dushera, the CBI swarmed on unsuspecting government officials
and spoiled their puja and deewali. This Deepawali government officers are afraid
to accept even the conventional sweet packets, for there may be a CBI sleuth
round the corner to catch them red handed. But yesterday it was the Income Tax
sleuths who gave the fire works to the glittering stars of Tamil Cinema. It
was a different tune for AR Rahman, the internationally acclaimed music director,
when the IT authorities whisked him away to their office, not exactly for a
song. Though figures are not readily available, it is reported that the raids
of about 20 stars did not fetch more than a Crore of rupees- something that
CBI manages routinely even in its leaked raids. Either the stars are not really
all that reach as compared to some other sections or they know where to keep
their money - away from the prying eyes of gate crashing Income Tax officials.
The Department used about 300 officers to conduct the raids. </font></p>

nagging question – “Is the Income Tax department aware of a group
of people called politicians who normally don’t do anything for a living
like the rest of us, but who by some strange magic are forced to live with huge
sums of money that lands up in their lap for no fault of theirs?” </font></p>
