Curtain Calls - Tax Encores

PROLOGUE: Curtain Call on a Tax Tragicomedy

Fifty-one weeks, fifty-one acts. GST in 2025 was less a tax system than a repertory theatre-sometimes Shakespearean tragedy, sometimes slapstick farce, often both in the same scene. The taxpayer played protagonist, the bureaucracy auditioned as master of ceremonies, the judiciary stumbled into reluctant heroism, and satire became the chorus that refused to exit stage.

As the curtain falls, we raise a toast - not to GST's perfection, but to the resilience of taxpayers, the persistence of courts, and the stubborn humour that kept us sane.

This is : a panoramic summary of 2025, and a wish for 2026 to be less a jest and more a justice.

The Tribunal That Never Arrived

Jest GST 2025 Playlist Index (January to December) - A year of satire

Appeals piled up in a waiting room with no door. Dues Before Views: The Mysterious Missing GSTAT reminded us of the tribunal that never came. GSTAT Procedure Rules proved procedure can be drafted for an institution that doesn't exist. From Licence Raj to Registration Rage showed domicile became destiny. By May, satire sharpened into grammar wars with Or means And - Supreme Court vs. Bureaucracy: The Word War, where "or" meant "and" depending on who you asked.

GSTAT remained the world's most famous imaginary friend.

Enforcement Excess: The Theatre of Fear

If tribunals were missing, enforcement was omnipresent. January brought GST Penalty of Rs. 3731 Crores on an Employee - Tax Torment Turned Triumph. February staged The GST Sleepover, with taxpayers detained overnight. March offered Arrest But Carefully. By July, crescendo: Draconian attachment: Freeze Frame with GST, GST - Jail is a Detour; Bail is GPS ; and GST - Arrest - Custody and Cameras. August added oxymorons with Voluntary Detention & Other Oxymorons.

Liberty was scaffolded, CCTV cameras blinked out "due to construction," and habeas corpus petitions became the new compliance form. Bail hearings echoed Magna Carta, reminding us that freedom is not a departmental courtesy. In GSTland, fear was the default surcharge, and "voluntary detention" was the oxymoron of the year.

When bail hearings start sounding like Magna Carta, you know enforcement has gone full Shakespeare.

Procedural Absurdities: Comedy of Errors

Procedure became parody. No DIN: Go to BIN showed notices without identification numbers. Show Cause and Effect revealed cut-and-paste notices. Notices That Nobody Notices documented orders hiding silently in dashboards. Remand by Appellate Authority - No Second Innings gave the Revenue a second innings it did not deserve.

GST managed to turn procedure into parody, where the taxpayer's only defence was screenshots and sarcasm.

Bureaucracy vs Judiciary: Tug-of-Words

Courts pulled for justice, babus pulled for themselves, taxpayers were the rope. Or means And - Supreme Court vs. Bureaucracy: The Word War set the tone. What Judgement? I'm the Law Here! documented officers defying High Court orders. GST Appeals - Electronic Credit Ledger: A Digital Mirage? showed pre-deposits couldn't be paid from credit ledgers until courts disagreed.

Judicial rescue was constant; babus rewrote history retrospectively.

In this tug-of-war, taxpayers were the rope-frayed, stretched, and snapped.

Reform & Rhetoric: GST 2.0

Midyear brought GST at 8: Still Loading… …, proving portals can celebrate birthdays without growing up. GST Returns - No Ctrl+Z? and The Taxing Tale of Laws, Rules, and Regulations showed legislative enthusiasm outpacing reality. September reignited culinary politics in GST 2.0 - Reform, Roti & the Republic of Rates. October staged bureaucratic ballet in GST 2.0 - Buzzwords, Burdens, and Bureaucratic Ballet: A Tax Congress Chronicle.

GST 2.0 was less "next generation" and more "rerun with better lighting."

Symbols & Culture

Even satire paused to salute the Tiranga; GST - The Tiranga Exempted: Flag Beyond Tax exempt from GST, exempt from cynicism. Coconut oil returned as a classification saga proving that even breakfast needs a lawyer. The Hawaii chappal test resurfaced, reminding us that footwear and luxury cars cannot share a slab.

Sitare Zameen Par refracted cinema through taxation.

In these cultural detours, GST revealed itself not just as tax but as arbiter of identity, taste, and dignity. When roti rolled tax-free and idli paid to rise, fiscal policy became culinary politics.

Corporate Sagas

Infosys, architect of the GST portal, found itself slapped with a ?32,403 crore demand (The Infosys Saga - Genuinely Shocked Taxpayer?)-only to watch it vanish like a quantum liability. Courts reminded officers that contempt for precedent is not policy (What Judgement? I'm the Law Here!).

Big-ticket cases became morality plays: babus chasing billions, companies chasing clarity, and taxpayers chasing refunds. In the end, the numbers were less important than the spectacle: GST as cricket match, where Infosys chased 32,403 runs and won in the last over.

December's Finale

The last quarter of 2025 brought no closure, only confirmation.

The Vanishing Taxpayer erased identities. Next Hearing: Yesterday proved time travel possible in GSTland. GST Appeals - High Court Resets Time showed judicial patience longer than deadlines. Stamping out GST confusion tried to replace fog with daylight. GST Loses Interest - Chit Funds Win Clarity offered lucidity. Finally, GSTR 9 Extension: The Annual Return of Anxiety closed the year with repetition and resignation.

Thus, closed the year not with resolution but with repetition. The tribunal remained a suggestion, enforcement remained excessive, procedures remained absurd, reforms remained rhetorical.

Epilogue: A Toast to 2026

So, what did 2025 teach us? That GST is ambitious, bold, glitchy, and stubborn. That taxpayers are resilient, courts are patient, and babus are inventive in their errors. That satire is not optional - it is survival.

As we raise a toast to 2026, let us wish:

- For tribunals that exist not just in notifications.

- For enforcement that respects liberty.

- For procedures that follow reason.

- For reforms that mean relief.

- For satire that can finally retire from firefighting.

GST 2025 was a year where "or" became "and," where notices were invisible, where reforms were sequels, and where taxpayers learned that in the theatre of taxation, the only certainty is the next act.

And so, the curtain falls on GST 2025 - applause optional, anxiety compulsory.
