This is the question that is nagging the President while addressing the Nation
on the eve of Republic Day. We are fortunate to have a scientist President who
can think of concepts like Societal transformation and the need for employment
generation. The President has identified the following areas</span></p>

<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana; color: blue">In the Indian
history, very rarely we have come across a situation, all at a time, an
ascending economic trajectory, continuously rising foreign exchange reserve,
global recognition of technological competence, emergence of our 540 million
youth both men and women as a dynamic positive force for national development,
umbilical connectivities of 20 million people of Indian origin in various parts
of the planet, and the interest shown by many developed countries to invest in
our engineers and scientists including setting up of new R&D centres. This is
the time the nation should launch series of missions in the five areas that is
<b>Agriculture and food processing, education and healthcare, information and
communication technology, infrastructure development and self reliance in
critical technologies</b>, leading to transforming India into a developed nation
by 2020. </span></p>

better PR outfit<br>

uncovered. </span></b><span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana">The
</span><span style="font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Verdana">Presidential awards
for the officers of the Customs and Central Excise department were presented by
the Finance Minister yesterday but what is the importance given, by CBEC and the
DRI which organised the function, to the awards function? There was hardly any
publicity, any journalistic presence, any press note – it was as if a secret
function was being organised, which the CBEC did not want to be spoiled by
presence of journalists. Not many of them were invited! TIOL would have been
happy to carry reports about the awardees and their great work, which ultimately
got them the awards and recognition, but there was absolutely no information
available – anywhere! Why is the CBEC shy of presenting its best officers? Or is
it that lethargy has fully taken over that nothing, just nothing, is important?
It’s time that the Revenue Boards have full time PROs to highlight the
achievements of the departments and present a better image. We in TIOL are ready
to extend all support to the Boards, but are they ready?</span></p>
